ASTM A106 / ASME SA106 pipes are seamless carbon steel pipes used for high tempertaure applications (up to 750 degrees F). These pipes are widely used in the oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation and ship-building industries (examples: refineries, downstream plants, vessels. boilers and towers). A106 pipes are particulary suited whenever the trasported fluid has either high temperature or high pressure (or both combined). These pipes can be flanged, bent and formed.

ASTM A106 / SA106 pipes are available in size range from 1/2 to 28 inches, and in pipe schedules from 10 to 160. These pipes are supplied either in single random lenght (17-24') or double random lenght (36 -44').

This specification covers carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. These pipes are suitable for welding, bending, flanging, and similar forming operations. Mechanical testing of the specimens shall include tensile, bending, flattening, hydrostatic and nondestructive electric tests. Specimens undergoing bending tests shall consist of sections cut from a pipe. For flattening tests, the specimens shall be smooth on the ends and burr-free, except when made on crop ends. All tests shall be performed in room temperature. If any test specimen shows flaws it can be discarded and substituted for another test specimen. Before testing, if a specimen has scribe scratches, a retest shall be allowed. A retest shall also be allowed if a specimen breaks in an inside or outside surface flaw. This abstract is a brief summary of the referenced standard. 1. Scope

1.1 This specification2 covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service (Note 1) in NPS 1/8 to NPS 48 [DN 6 to DN 1200] (Note 2) inclusive, with nominal (average) wall thickness as given in ASME B 36.10M. It shall be permissible to furnish pipe having other dimensions provided such pipe complies with all other requirements of this specification. Pipe ordered under this specification shall be suitable for bending, flanging, and similar forming operations, and for welding. When the steel is to be welded, it is presupposed that a welding procedure suitable to the grade of steel and intended use or service will be utilized. NOTE 1: It is suggested, consideration be given to possible graphitization. NOTE 2: The dimensionless designator NPS (nominal pipe size) [DN (diameter nominal)] has been substituted in this standard for such traditional terms as “nominal diameter,” “size,” and “nominal size.”

1.2 Supplementary requirements of an optional nature are provided for seamless pipe intended for use in applications where a superior grade of pipe is required. These supplementary requirements call for additional tests to be made and when desired shall be so stated in the order.

1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.

In terms of material grades, A106 pipes are manufactured in grade A, B and C. NPS 1-1/2″ and below are available in the hot finished or by cold drawn type. Pipes of NPS 2 inch and above are generally are hot rolled manufatured. A106 pipes are produced out of killed steel. The chemical composition of the three grades of ASTM A106 is shown in the following table:

The manufacturing tolerances of ASTM A106 pipes are shown in the table below. To summarize:

  • Diameter: see table
  • Wall thickness: the minimum wt of the pipe shall not be, at any point, below the nominal pipe size minus 12.5%
  • Weight: the allowed tolerance in weight shall be within -3.5% and +10% vs. specification. The weight test can be executed on lots for smaller nominal pipe sized (below 4 inches) but must be executed pipe by pipe for higher diameters (6 inch and above).

Hdrostatic test of A106 pipes: the hydrotest shall apply a pressure equal to 60% of the minimum yield strenght for at least 5 seconds at atmospheric conditions. The maximum pressure shall not exceed 2500 psi for pipes up to 3 inches, and 2800 for larger sizes. If additional, non standard, tests are executed, the pipe shall bear an "S" mark on each lenght or pipe bundle.


Each lenght of pipe (or bundle for smaller diameters) shall have the following markings applied:

  • Manufacturer name
  • ASTM A106 A / B / C (material grade)
  • Diameter and ANSI schedule (from 10 to 160 and XXS)
  • Pipe lenght
  • Heat number
  • Hydrostatic test pressure or NDE
  • Weight / foot
