 PIPES AND TUBES

Pipes are used to deploy pipelines that transport high and low temperature hydrocarbons (oil), gas, steam, acids (such as H2SO4, sulfuric acid and other corrosive media) and water.

Tubes are used to build pressure equipment (boilers and superheaters typically) and deploy instrumentation systems to measure key process paramaters.

The word tube is generally used also with reference to mechanical applications.

The most important dimensional parameter for pipes is the inside bore (or inside diameter), whereas for tubes the outside diameter is the key measure. Pipes and tubes are represented as straight lines in the P&ID sketches and layouts.  

The difference between pipe and tube...

The word "pipe" is used with reference to pipelines (oil, gas, water, steam, H2SO4, other acids); the word "tube" is instead used with reference to pressure equipment (heat exchangers, super heaters, boilers), measurement and instrumentation systems and to mechanical applications.

The most important dimension of a pipe is the inside diameter (called "pipe ID") which is expressed by a nominal pipe size value ("NPS" or "DN" in Europe, i.e. nominal diameter). The NPS is a rough indication of the pipe bore sizes / fluid flow capacity; the actual external diameter of a pipe does not always match with the nominal diameter / NPS (a 2 inches pipe, for instance, has an internal flow capacity of approximately 2 inches, but has an actual external diameter of 2.375 inches).

The most important dimension of a tube is the outside diameter ("tube OD"), a measure that can be expressed in inches or millimeters; tube’s wall thickness (WT) is defined either in BWGs (Birmingham Wire Size), SWG (Standard Wire Gauge) or inches/millimeters. The difference between the outside diameter and the wall thickness of the tube (multiplied by two) defines the inside diameter of a tube.

The dimensions of ASTM/API pipes and tubes generally refer to the ASME B36.10, ASME B36.19 norms (pipes) and ASTM A450 (tubes), whereas EN pipes and tubes dimensions refer to the norms EN 10220 (carbon steel and alloy steel) and EN 1127 (stainless steel and nickel alloyed steels). The pipe and tube difference is related to terminology and usage.

SEAMLESS PIPES AND WELDED PIPES

There are two basic types of pipes and tubes:

SEAMLESS PIPES

A seamless pipe or a seamless tube is manufactured by drawing a solid billet through a piercing rod that creates the hollow section. Since the manufacturing process does not include welds, seamless pipes and tubes are stronger and more reliable than welded pipes and tubes and are generally priced higher (even if the production costs of seamless and welded pipes, and the raw materials, may not really differ much). WELDED PIPES

Welded pipes and tubes are manufactured out of steel coils and / or plates. The two main categories of welded tubulars are ERW and SAW:

  • ERW PIPES AND ERW TUBES (Electric resistance welding pipes and tubes): ERW pipes and ERW tubes are manufactured by welding steel coils longitudinally. The welding process for a ERW pipe is continuous (not at intervals). The high-frequency induction technology (HFI = high frequency induction welding) is the most common process to manufacture ERW pipes. An induction coil around the tube generates the current applied on the pipe to create the weld joint. ERW-HFI pipe are considered to be superior to ordinary ERW pipes and are better suited for critical applications (such as line pipes).
  • SAW PIPE (Submerged Arc Welding pipes and tubes): SAW pipes and tubes are manufactured by bending and welding steel plates and are most commonly used for oil and gas transmission lines. SAW pipes have higher costs then ERW pipes but compete against ERW pipes and seamless pipes in the diameter range 16-24. There are different types of SAW pipes, such as LSAW pipes (longitudinal submerged arc welding), DSAW pipes (double submerged arc welding, the weld is on both the internal and external side of the pipe) and SSAW pipes or HSAW pipes (spiral seam weld pipe, i.e. pipes produced by the spiral welding of plates, typically used in water applications and not in oil and gas).

PIPES DIMENSION ASME B36.10 / ASME B36.19

Pipe manufacturers align to the two following norms to standardize the production of pipes:

  • ASME B36.10M FOR CARBON STEEL PIPES AND ALLOY STEEL PIPES (SEAMLESS PIPES, WELDED PIPES): The norm defines the dimensions of seamless pipes and welded pipes for high or low temperatures and pressures. Pipe with a nominal pipe size of 12 inches (DN 300) and smaller have outside diameters larger than the corresponding sizes, while the value is identical for diameters above 12 inches. ANSI/ASME B36.10 includes other pipe thicknesses that are also commercially available with stainless steel material.
  • ASME B36.19M FOR SEAMLESS STAINLESS STEEL PIPES AND WELDED STAINLESS STEEL PIPES: This norm covers the standardization of welded and seamless wrought stainless steel pipe dimensions. Steel pipes of sizes 12 inches and smaller have outside diameters larger from a numerical standpoint than the corresponding size. This norm does not cover all pipe sizes for stainless steel pipes. Therefore, the dimensional requirements of ASME B36.10 apply to stainless steel pipe of the sizes and schedules not ruled by the ASME B36.19 Norm. The wall thicknesses for sizes between 14 and 22 including Schedule 10S, for size 12 Sch. 40S, and for sizes 10 and 12 Sch. 80S do not match with those of ANSI/ASME B36.10. The suffix S is used to distinguish the ASME B36.19M pipes from the ASME B36.10M pipes. Pipe manufacturers produce 5S sizes in way smaller amounts than other thicknesses.

The nominal pipe size (NPS) defines the dimensions and sizes of pipes and tubes used at high or low pressures and temperatures. The word NPS refers to the approximate internal diameter of the pipe in inches (pipe ID).

When pipes production started, pipes were manufactured only with a single thickness, which was commonly referred to as standard (STD) or standard weight or standard pipe wall thickness (STD. WT.) and the outer diameter of the pipe was therefore standardized as well. As the industrial requirements became more evolved, requiring the utilization of pressure pipeline systems, pipes started to be manufactured with higher wall thicknesses, which were named extra strong (XS) or alternatively extra heavy (XH). As the pressure requirements further increased in complexity, the double extra strong (XXS) or double extra heavy (XXH) walls were introduced, while the standardized outside diameters remained unchanged. In March 1927, the American Standards Association (ASA) introduced a system that designated the pipe wall thicknesses based on increasing steps among the possible sizes. Hence the nominal pipe size (NPS) system replaced the iron pipe size (IPS), and the word schedule (SCH) was introduced to design the nominal wall thickness of pipes.

In addition to carbon, alloy and stainless steel pipes, the material grade range includes also non-ferrous pipes and tubes, plastic pipes (the most common is the PVC pipe). As regards to pricing, while carbon steel pipes show quite stable prices, stainless steel pipe have a stronger price variability due to the impact of raw materials such as nickel and chrome. These metals have a fluctuating price on the market and have generated a strong volatility of stainless steel and nickel alloy pipe pricing (mainly due to the LME price of nickel). Stainless steel tube suppliers, therefore, are used to issue quotation with a shorter time validity as compared to carbon steel pipes and tubes suppliers. Galvanized steel pipes are carbon steel pipes that withstand a higher corrosion than carbon steel pipes. Galvanized steel pipes are manufactured by applying a zinc coating to black steel pipes. For some applications instead coated steel pipe may be required.

ASTM A106 PIPES - SEAMLESS CARBON STEEL PIPE FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE SERVICE

The specification ASTM A106 relates to seamless carbon steel pipes for high-temperature service which are suitable for bending, flanging and other forming operations.

NPS 1-1/2″ and under are manufactured either by hot finishing or by cold drawn. NPS 2″ and larger are generally hot finished if not otherwise specified.

API 5L PIPES - PIPE YIELD AND TENSILE STRENGHT

API 5L line pipes have two possible grade designations, A and B. The yield strength of the API 5L pipes are specified with the number that follows the X in the material grade specification (the yield strength is defined as kilo pounds per square inch – i.e. ksi). So, for instance, an API 5L X52 pipe has a minimum yield strength of 52 ksi. The yield strengths of the various API 5L material grades are summarized in the below table (strengths in min ksi):

ASTM A333 (ASME S/A-333) material grade is suited for low temperature service, mainly in seamless execution. Different grades of ferritic steel belong to this norm. Some pipe sizes may not be available in A333 due to the fact that heavier wall thicknesses have an adverse effect on low-temperature impact properties. A333 pipe is available in nine different grades designated by numbers 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, & 11.

Pipes can be supplied with external coatings and/or internal lining, to withstand specific process requirements. The typical materials used for pipe coatings and lining are listed in the table below:
