 BOLT SETS FOR FLANGES

Stud bolts are used to join the flanges of a pipeline. A stud bolt “set” is made of a threaded rod and two nuts (therefore stud bolts and nuts are sourced together and in combination). Washers may also be part of the bolt set.

The required number of stud bolts for a flanged connection depends on the number of bolt holes of the flanges (which is a function of the flange diameter and pressure class). The diameter and the length of the stud bolt depends on the flange type and on the flange dimension (diameter and pressure class). Stud bolts lengths are defined in ASME B16.5. A bolting set comprises:

Threaded rod stud bolts

The bolt length equals the effective threaded length as measured parallel to the axis, starting from the first thread without the chamfers (points). The threading of bolts is defined by the ASME B1.1 Norm, i.e. “Unified Inch Screw Threads”. The most common thread is the symmetrical form with a V-profile, which has an angle of 60°, as these are easier to manufacture and inspect as compared to the non-symmetrical threads. The thread series treat designations of the diameter and pitch combinations that are measured by the number of threads per inch (TPI) applied to a single diameter.

The standard thread pitches are:

  • Coarse thread series (UNC/UNRC): this is the most commonly used thread system which is applied for most screws, bolts, and nuts. Coarse threads are adopted for threads in low strength materials such as iron, mild steel, copper and softer alloy, aluminum, etc. The coarse thread is also more tolerant in adverse conditions and it facilitates quick assembly
  • Fine thread series (UNF/UNRF) is widely used in precision duties and when a higher tensile strength is required as compared to the coarse thread series
  • 8-Thread series (8UN) is the elective threading method for multiple ASTM standards including A193 B7, A193 B8/B8M, and A320. This series is widely used for diameters from one inch upwards

The required length of a stud bolt may be calculated with the following formula:

L = 2 (s + n + h + rf) + g

whereas s stands for the free threads length (which shall be 1/3 of the bolt diameter), n = nuts height (which shall be equal to the nominal bolt diameter), h = flange thickness, rf = raised face height, g = gasket thickness

 HEXAGONAL NUTS

The dimensional requirement of the hexagonal nuts are defined by the ASME B18.2.2 Norm. Depending on customer’s specification, nuts may be both sites chamfered or with on one side a washer-face.

 BOLTING SETS TYPES

There are two main types of bolting sets:

  • Stud bolt set: consisting of a threaded rod and 2 heavy hexagonal nuts (having 6 sides)
  • Hexagonal head bolt set: consisting in one threaded rod with an hexagonal head and a separate nut (nuts and head with 6 sides).

Generally, stud bolts are widely used for flanged connections and are cheaper than hexagonal head bolts, due to the easier manufacturing process. U bolts are used to fix pipes.

Bolt sets can also be classified based on the unit of measure to designate the diameter and the length of the rod:

  • IMPERIAL stud bolts, have diameter and lengths expressed in inches
  • METRIC stud bolts, have diameter expressed in metric measures such as M8 to M64 and lengths expressed in millimeters

 BOLTING SETS DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHTS

The dimensions of imperial stud bolts are defined in the ASME B16.5 Norm, whereas ISO 1891 defined the dimensions and measures of metric stud bolts.

In any case, the theoretical length of a stud bolt can be calculated with the following formula :

L = 2 x (S + he + eb + i) + J

Where:

  • S: free threads (1 to 2 pitch)
  • he: nut thickness
  • eb: flange thickness (with tolerance)
  • i: height of raised face (for 150 and 300 flanges rating, the height of raised face is included in eb height)
  • J: gasket thickness

 BOLTING SETS MATERIAL GRADES

ASTM defined the material grades for stud bolts. The most common grades are ASTM A193 for thread rods and ASTM A194 for the nuts:

  • ASTM A193 covers alloy and stainless steel bolting material for pressure vessels, valves, flanges, and fittings for high temperature or high pressure service, or other special purpose applications.
  • ASTM A194 covers a variety of carbon, alloy, and martensitic and austenitic stainless steel nuts. These nuts are intended for high-pressure or high-temperature service, or both.
